What exactly is social commerce and how is it different from regular eCommerce?

Hey everyone, I’ve been seeing the term social commerce pop up a lot lately, especially when people talk about selling on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and even Facebook. I run a small online business and I’ve always just thought of it all as eCommerce, but now I’m realizing there’s a whole other layer to it.

From what I’ve gathered, social commerce is more about selling directly through social media instead of just using it for marketing and sending people to your website. But I’m still a bit unclear on where the line is. Like, if someone clicks a product tag on Instagram and checks out right there, is that technically social commerce? Or is it still considered regular online selling?

Also, I found this article while researching accountants who specialize in Amazon FBA and social commerce businesses: https://www.socialcommerceaccountants.com/post/how-to-choose-the-right-amazon-fba-accountant-and-why-choose-us. It got me thinking about how much more complicated bookkeeping gets when you're selling across multiple social platforms and marketplaces.

Would love to hear from anyone here who’s been deep in the social commerce world. How do you define it? Is it really that different from what we've all been doing with Shopify and Amazon? Curious to hear real-world experiences.
