FUNDING

​Deafinitely Theatre has launched a second round of the Deaf Freelancers Bursary, a special project to support deaf or hard of hearing freelance theatre practitioners and performers during the Covid-19 pandemic. They have six bursaries of £1,000 to support freelancers develop their practice in Summer 2021. Examples of how the money could be used are, developing a new idea, a period of research, collaborating with another theatre maker or training

The Creative Future Writers’ Award is an annual development programme for talented writers from a wealth of backgrounds. Winners are selected by a panel of industry experts and are given the opportunity to develop their work through training, mentoring, assessment and coaching. Prizes are awarded for both poetry and short fiction, including cash & professional writing development opportunities. Are you a New Contemporaries Alumni? Did you display within the last eight years? If so, you are entitles to apply for The Bluecoats' New Contemporaries Studio Bursary. It covers the cost of a year-long studio space from July 2021 to July 2022. If you qualify, you can find out more information and apply here.


Deadline: Monday 24th May 2021 10.00am.

 

Submissions are now open for the 25th Alfred Fagon Award - the leading award for Black British playwrights. The competition is open to any playwright of Caribbean or African descent, resident in the UK, for the best original, new stage play in English. Entrants must confirm on their CV that that they are of African and Caribbean descent. Television, radio plays and film scripts will not be considered. RESOURCES/TRAINING

 

The BBC have opened applications for their KickStart scheme, which are a range of paid apprenticeships opens to graduates, school leavers or those looking for a way to change their career. They have opportunities in the fields of design, production, journalism and business in areas all around the UK. For more info, including how to apply and what it involves, follow the link here.

The Connect: Resound Learning Festival is happening from 17th - 21st May and is completely FREE. Designed for everyone involved in music education it will feature sessions which will inspire new ideas, equip you with new skills, invite you to think about the future of music learning as well as an opportunity to discuss the challenges of remote music education with your peers. It will all be happening via zoom or YouTube and you can find out more information via the website here.


The great people at The Uncultured currently have spaces available for those looking for help to write Developing Your Creative Practice Arts Council bids. The offer is open to those who are neurodivergent and or disabled and because they are being funded, it will come at no cost to you. They have a high success rate with those they have worked with and you can get in touch with them via email at contact@the-uncultured.com for more information.​


 

The Brain Charity are hosting a FREE webinar for people struggling with post Covid anxiety as the world begins to re-open. It is taking place on 19th May 2021 from 10.30am and there will be a number of sessions ranging from Q&A's with public health, mindfulness and confidence coaching. Movema are back with some more amazing free classes for all the family. The FREE World in a box online classes for families will commence on Thurs 1st April 2021, 4.30-5.30pm. To book your space and see what other classes are available, follow the link here.

These are 30 minute one-to-one appointments with freelance dramaturg and Paperwork’s Co-Artistic Director, Hayley Greggs. Names will be drawn at random and meetings will be allocated via email. WELL BEING

 

The Theatre Helpline is a free (from mobiles and landlines), independent

and confidential phone and email service that provides support to people working in the theatre industry. It’s open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year round

Leading a movement against suicide. Open to all, they also have campaigns for males facing mental health struggles. Call: 0800 58 58 58. The helpline and webchat is open to all and can be accessed 5pm – Midnight every day, 365 days a year. Or visit their website here.

 

The British Association for Performing Arts Medicine has a range of services to help support the medical needs of those in the performing arts. From free clinics, information resources and a practitioner directory, they are a good resource if you may be struggling with any health situations.

The Film and TV Charity have a 24 hour helpline and chat service available to anyone who is struggling at this time. Their trained team can provide help and advice about legal queries, mental health and financial advice.

The Actors’ Children’s Trust is a charity set to help those who are both actors and parents. Supplying grants to cover such expenses as childcare, support within education and to allow parents to visit their children more frequently when working long distant jobs or tours. They also offer advice and support and can signpost to other funding. To find out more about this charity and how it may be able to help you, you can follow the link here.


 

Student Space is a FREE confidential telephone support service available from 3pm to 12am every day. If you are a student you will be able to speak to a trained volunteer about any issues that are causing you concern and get help to be able to move forward. The number to call is 0808 189 5260. Inc Arts UK are a not for profit limited company whose mission is to diversify the workforce of the creative and cultural sector. They have partnered with Chanua Health to provide FREE group therapy led by qualified counsellors for people who have experienced racism to share their experiences and heal. Young Minds offer a free messaging service for young people. They also have a parents helpline available.

Food Banks and Places to Donate

 

The Liverpool Independent Delivery Service (LIDS) have a place you can directly give monetary donation to help with their programmes in collaboration with Red Neighbours.

Micah Liverpool have a food bank and a volunteer programme where you can donate your time to help. For more info on both click here


The Florrie are currently in the process of reopening their food union. You can contact them for more info on this here.


North Liverpool Foodbank has an option to access it's service and to help with it's services. To do so click here.


The Knowsley Foodbank are always accepting food donations, and have a list of useful items. They also have information on how to access the services and vouchers. For info click here.


The Your Local Pantry project has opened a new pantry for Toxteth, which aims to create a sustainable and long-term solution to food poverty. You sign up to a weekly subscription of £3.50, and will be able to have access to 10 items of food including fresh fruit and vegetables and store cupboard favourites that will often value £15-20 or more. Theatre

Acting For Others is a consortium of 14 member charities set up to help provide financial and emotional support to professionals within the theatre.


 

Get into Theatre is a one stop shop of ways into a career in theatre. They have sections on training, experience and funding.

With information on courses and funding, this website is a useful resource whether you are a newbie to it all, or an experienced professional looking for further development.

 

Backstage Front of House


If you work backstage or front of house

and are struggling right now then The Theatrical Guild might be a good place to look, they have set up a great resource for theatre workers at any stage of their career. It includes help with finances, funding, counselling and training. You can apply for help here, and if you aren't eligible, they will pass you onto an organisation that can help.


 

Playwrights and Writers


The Peggy Ramsay foundation is a charity set up to help give theatre writers the space and time to write. If you have had a play professionally produced, you can qualify for support.

The Society of Authors has set up the Authors' Emergency fund.

Open to all professional authors who are resident in the UK, including writers, illustrators, literary translators, scriptwriters, poets, journalists and others. Note: those who have had ACE emergency response fund are ineligible for this grant. Find out how to apply here.

 

Education


Education Support as a charity who help provide effective and relevant support to all of those working in the education sector today.

They currently have grants to help those who are either working or retired from the education sector. There are a few criteria involved in applying, so we recommend reading the outline of it all here.

 

Various


The Responsa Foundation curates contemporary art projects exploring our intolerance to others. They support projects by either inviting artists to partake in projects, or funding proposals submitted by artists.


The Foundation's objective is, 'promote the belief that the history of intolerance repeats itself. By producing art that people engage with, we can find ways of exploring this difficult subject matter together and get it out there.'

ArtCry is a new fund supporting urgent artistic responses to current social and political events. If you are an artist who makes political work or is interested in making social and politically aware work, you can find more information about the fund here.

 

Black Artists

Creative Debuts have established the Black Artists Grant, which is on a rolling system so there is no deadline. Once a month £1000 will be given to black artists in the UK with each artist receiving £500. If you want to put yourself forward for a grant, you can find out more about how to do that here.

 

Music Industry


Music Support is a charity who offer support and resources for those within any area of the UK music industry suffering from mental, emotional and behavioural health disorders. Find out more.

 

The Association of Independent Music has opened a crisis fund for music contractors and freelance workers in the independent music industry, whose source of income has been severed without warning due to lost work in April and May as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It's an ongoing fund and you can join here to apply.

 

D/deaf and disabled Artists


Graeae are offering free support to Deaf and disabled freelancers thanks to support from Arts Council England and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. Support includes: access support for zoom meetings, purchase or loan of technology, help getting projects off the ground, and help with personal finance applications. More info here.


They are also offering support to Deaf and disabled artists who would like to attend online industry events/meetings but need access to do so, can help cover these costs! If you require BSL interpreters, captioners, notetakers or other access support please contact victoria@graeae.org.

 

RESOURCES AND TRAINING

 

PIPA are the Parents and Carers in Performing Arts, and was set up in the response to the lack of provisions for parents and carers within the performing arts They have lots of resources available to help support people in this situation and have also developed a charter to help organisations develop working practices which are inclusive and accessible for those with caring responsibilities.

Inc Arts have created Unlock, a FREE toolkit that gives arts organisations practical steps to take anti-racist action. Unlock has in it over 100 actions that will help creative work places become more inclusive. It offers a practical step-by-step process to think about what anti-racist action you can take in your workplace. MACFEST - Muslim Arts and Culture Festival, is a ground-breaking, award-winning festival hosted across Greater Manchester and the North West - and across the world! It celebrates art, literature, music, history, culture, photography, cuisine, children, youth and women and the heritage of the Muslim diaspora. They currently have a range of online workshops, panel discussions and exhibitions, many of which a free. You can find out more about MACFEST here.

It is a large pool of free resources, learning opportunities for independent producers, space for discussion and writings from some of the best in the theatre, live art and dance sectors. The Egg Assembly is an online tool for young people between the ages of 8-25, to be able to join and develop their creative practice. It is FREE to join and has a range of courses and workshops. Some are free and some range in price, but assistance can be provided if this is a barrier. It's also a chance to connect with other likeminded young creatives and develop skills and get creative. The Culture Diary is a free worldwide calendar of UK culture uploaded by over 14,000 UK organisations covering every art form. Without Walls have commissioned a guide to promote good practice amongst festivals and events that are involved in the outdoor arts network. Devised by FESTIVAL.ORG, led by Alex Covell in her role as the Without Walls Access Advisor. This guide outlines how Greenwich+Docklands International Festival (GDIF) plans and delivers access provision across all of these various contexts and locations. The guide is also intended to complement other existing resources such as the ISAN (now Outdoor Arts UK) Access Toolkit. You can download the guide here.


 

Comics Youth have a range of great stuff happening including a Saturday comics workshop and D&D sessions.

Action Transport Theatre are now running their youth drama classes on zoom. They have their Droplets group (aged 7-11 yrs) and Drama drop in (12 - 17 yrs).

Unstoppable are a production house who have an open submissions policy. If you have a script you want to submit, especially if you are new to the industry, you can do so by emailing info@unstoppableftv.com.

 

Have an outdoor show ready to book? Outdoor Arts UK have created an online directory for shows that are able to be performed in the current climate accounting for social distancing and safety measures for both artists and audiences. It’s a straightforward form to fill in, which you can do here.

 

Open Hire is a new initiative set up by Josh Roche and Derek Bond. It is about opening up the approach of hiring freelancers, and making it a more fair and transparent process.

It is asking theatres to sign up to the Open Hire guidelines, and make this a new way of working.

Out on the page is a place of support and connection for LGBTQ+ writers.
